 HE FORT LEE PUBLIC
LIBRARY, established in 1919, has been housed in its present
facility at Main and Center since 1971. Between 1919 and 1971,
the Library moved from public school classrooms to real estate
offices to the second floor of Borough Hall. However, that area
quickly became too small and in 1971, the citizens approved the
funding of the present building. In 1997, the first major renovation
and expansion of the Library began and was completed in the summer
of 1998. The enlarged building is now 7,600 square feet on two
levels. The lower level childrens room has space for 52
seats, a circular story time area, and a computer alcove, as
well as increased book space. The upper level provides seating
for 60 in the new fiction area, a new conference room, and quiet
areas. An atrium connects the new wing with the prior building.
The lower level is devoted to compact discs, videotapes and periodicals.
The building has been updated to reflect new safety and ADA requirements
as well as having had a general refurbishment. The new facility
boasts a reconfigured parking lot which accommodates 75 cars.
In addition to printed materials, there are on-line services.
Through the UMI Magazine Index, magazine databases are available
for research. Newspaper articles can be found through the Newspaper
Index, which prepares a list of articles from the New York Times
and the Bergen Record.
The
Fort Lee Public Library is a member of BCCLS (Bergen County Cooperative
Library System), which is the tenth largest library system in
the nation. Members of the Library may borrow from any Bergen
County library with their Fort Lee card. If you cannot pick up
the materials requested from another library, the Fort Lee Library
will order the items and hold them at the appropriate desk for
3 days. If there is an item that is not in any Bergen County
library, the Reference Department may be able to get it through
the New Jersey State Library within 6 weeks.
The
Fort Lee Public Library web site address is www/bccls.org/fortlee. The database can be
accessed from a home computer from 9:00 p.m. - 9:00 a.m. on weekdays
and from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 a.m on Saturday and Sunday. You will
need a Fort Lee Public Library card, an IBM or Mac computer,
a minimum 14,400bps modem, a telecommunications program (must
be able to support VT100 or greater), and a standard voice grade
telephone line. Set the protocol to 8 data bits, no parity and
1 stop bit. The dial-in number is 996-0092. Press the return
key once or twice when the modem connects. Sessions are limited
to 30 minutes.
